FAQ

Have questions about working with Nutrition IQ or a Dietitian in general? Here are the answers to some of our most commonly asked questions.

In Ontario, Dietitian is a protected title that can only be used by individuals who have completed an accredited 4-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent and an accredited internship or practicum. They must be registered through the College of Dietitians of Ontario who ensure that Dietitians across Ontario provide safe, ethical and quality nutrition services as well as participate in ongoing quality assurance programs to make sure they keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date.

Nutritionist is not a protected term in Ontario. This means that anyone can use the term Nutritionist without any formal education and there are no regulatory requirements for someone using that title.

They can be. Most employee insurance plans will cover individual counselling with a Dietitian, however, coverage is dependent on your individual employer and what they have selected for your benefits package. I always recommend that clients check with their employee benefits to make sure that they have coverage. It's also good to know the amount of that coverage so we can discuss how many appointments that will cover.

It should be noted that group programs are not typically covered by insurance, however, they may be covered under a healthcare spending account. Again, it's always good to look at your specific benefits package to see what's covered and what's not.

All appointments with Nutrition IQ are currently virtual. We meet via video chat through a secure online platform that allows for video chats, private messaging, document sharing, and invoicing.

Because all of our appointments are virtual, you do not have to be in Ottawa. However, because Dietitians are regulated provincially, you must be in Ontario to have a one-on-one appointment with Nutrition IQ. Currently, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick allow for Dietitians registered in other provinces to see clients within those provinces. Therefore, it's possible that if you are in Ontario, Nova Scotia, or New Brunswick you can book an appointment with Nutrition IQ.

If you are not in Ontario, New Brunswick, or Nova Scotia and you want to work with Nutrition IQ, you can check out our online programs, Finding Your Fit and The Nourished Mama which are available worldwide.

Finding Your Fit is an online program that teaches you how to improve your body image AND cultivate a personal style that celebrates your body as is.

How many times have you put on an outfit that didn’t quite fit, and then go the whole day feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious?

Maybe you have a closet full of clothes that don’t fit well, and you are hoping that one day, your body will magically shrink to fit them.

If you feel like you’ve tried everything to change your body, with the hope that once it fits that one shirt, dress, pair of jeans, etc… your body image will suddenly improve, you are not alone.

What if you could let go of this belief, and start embracing and respecting your body, as it is, here and now?

That’s why we’ve designed Finding Your Fit - to help you cultivate a better body image and develop your personal style. Our online self-study program will help you nurture respect for your body as-is while also equipping you with the tools you need to build a wardrobe that screams ‘you’. You can find out more about Finding Your Fit by clicking here.

The Nourished Mama is an online program that walks busy moms through the principles of Intuitive Eating while also providing a safe and supportive community to cheer on, lean on, and learn from.

If you’ve been working on ditching dieting and improving your relationship with food, you know how difficult it can be when it feels like everyone else close to you is still dieting. The Nourished Mama is an online group program designed to teach you about Intuitive Eating, a compassionate, self-care eating framework that treats all bodies with dignity and respect. This program will also teach you how to apply the principles of Intuitive Eating to your life in addition to providing you with the social support that you’ve been missing. Find out more about The Nourished Mama here.

The length of the appointment depends on the type of appointment. Initial consultations are 90 minutes and follow-ups are 60 minutes. If we have been meeting for a while and you're only looking for help with accountability, there is also an option for 30-minute appointments.

This really depends on you as the client and what your needs are. Some clients only need a few appointments, whereas others meet with me for a year or more. This is something that we can discuss in the FREE discovery call, however, it is hard to establish a timeline before we start working together.

Unfortunately, Dietitians in Ontario are not allowed to solicit or post client testimonials or reviews under the College of Dietitians of Ontario. This is true of most regulated health professionals. While clients are able to leave Google or Facebook reviews, based on the nature of our work, how personal food is to many people, and the fact that these reviews are not anonymous, most clients don't.

No. While we will take a look at what you're eating and I will make suggestions to optimize your eating based on your health goals, I don't believe in restricting eating. I strongly believe that all foods fit and that restricting and demonizing certain foods often detracts from our overall health and wellness. Instead, I like to get people out of the diet cycle and help them focus on what foods are nourishing, and sustainable, and provide the energy needed to do all the things they want to do in a day.

No. While many clients ask for meal plans and believe that they need to be following a specific plan, in my experience following a meal plan is not sustainable for most people. They may follow a plan for a short period of time, but then they get bored and the meal plan falls by the wayside. Instead, we look at what you're currently eating, and based on your health goals, we discuss what we can add to your current meals in order to meet those goals. This is often much more realistic for people compared to full diet overhauls.

I require all new clients to have a free phone call with me so that we can chat about what you're looking for, how I work, and whether I would be a good fit for what you need. I like my clients to enjoy working with me, so if I don't think I can help you, I will try my best to give you the names of other dietitians/health professionals who may be a better fit. You can book your free call online here.
